Questions and Answers

Halftoning:

This term represents the process of small dots of ink simulating a lighter shade of a solid color. Because we have a 6 spot color printing capacity, often times we'll utilize halftones of one of the printed colors to allow the design to have more levels of perceived color. The halftoned areas share the same screen as the solid color. Halftoning percentages depend upon dot size. 0% would eqaul no color, while 100% equals a solid color. For screenprinting, we recommend a range of 20% to 80%.

Via non-screenprinted artwork, it is difficult to show what an image would look like with halftones. Computers represent digital artwork with fades and blends. A postscript laser printer interprets and prints the separated positives with tiny dots or halftones. Below, you will see the difference between the digital artwork of a customer logo and the bottom screenprinted version of the same logo. The pink, green, and brown have been halftoned in the printed version.
